Kyou Sohma: Kyou is the one person in the world that Tohru feels truly comfortable opening up to. Gentle, caring, and tender with her Kyou always puts her first, listening to her when upset or down, and helping her work through her fears and apprehensions. As a person who constantly hides her true self…the parts of herself she feels others would reject, Kyou slowly proves to her that he isn’t disillusioned and loves her for who and what she is. From the very beginning of the series he has pushed her to be upfront and tell people what she wants. He lets her know that it’s okay to cry and she doesn’t always have to pretend to be strong. Unlike any other character he knows Tohru probably better than she knows herself, having additional insight from the relationship he had with her mother as a child. Slowly Kyou has become the ‘number one person’ in her heart. This frightens Tohru at first, coming to the belief that if she loves Kyou then she is betraying her mother, replacing the happy memories they once shared. As more time passes however she realizes that he’s the one person she wants to spend the rest of her life with, and that although she loves and misses her mom, she has to move on and find her own happiness now too. It is because of Kyou that Tohru comes to the conclusion that she wants to break the curse. After she discovers that it is the fate of the cat to be locked away for the rest of his life after graduation, she decides that she wants to free Kyou from that fate, along with the rest of the zodiac. In the city, Tohru is farther back in time than that of Kyou. Recently, and very tentatively, they have begun dating. Now that her mom disappeared from the city she has come to depend upon him greatly, and he is helping her hold her head above the water. She’s still uncertain and mixed on her feelings, regressing slightly now that her mom disappeared for a second time.
